The Earth's Embrace: Sourcing the Clay

Our journey begins deep within the earth, where the finest quality clay is carefully sourced. This isn't just any clay; it's selected for its purity, workability, and ability to withstand the firing process, ensuring the longevity and durability of our mugs. The raw clay arrives at our workshops, a soft, malleable material that holds the promise of its future form.

Shaping Dreams: The Potter's Wheel and Hand-Building

Here's where the magic truly begins. Our skilled artisans, many of whom have honed their craft over generations, take the prepared clay and begin the shaping process. Some mugs are born on the traditional potter's wheel, where a lump of clay is expertly centered and coaxed upwards into a cylindrical form, its walls thinned and shaped with rhythmic precision. 

The Gentle Drying: A Time for Rest

Once shaped, the mugs are left to air dry slowly and evenly. This crucial stage prevents warping and cracking during the subsequent firing. It's a period of quiet transformation, where the water gradually evaporates, making the clay stronger and ready for its fiery trial.

The First Embrace of Fire: Bisque Firing

The dried mugs, now known as "greenware," are carefully loaded into a kiln for their first firing, called bisque firing. This process slowly heats the clay to a high temperature, around 1800-2000°F (980-1090°C), transforming it into a hard, porous ceramic material.

This "bisque ware" is now strong enough to handle, yet still absorbent, making it perfect for the next step: glazing.

A Splash of Color and Protection: Glazing

Now comes the artistic flourish! Each Nurture India mug is carefully dipped, poured, or brushed with lead-free, food-safe glazes. Our glazes are chosen not just for their aesthetic appeal, but also for their durability and ability to create a smooth, non-porous surface. This is where the mug gets its vibrant colors, its glossy or matte finish, and its protective layer that makes it easy to clean and safe for daily use.

The Final Inferno: Glaze Firing

With their new coat of glaze, the mugs return to the kiln for their final, and often hottest, firing. This glaze firing reaches even higher temperatures, typically between 2100-2300°F (1150-1260°C), causing the glaze to melt and fuse with the bisque ware.

When cooled, the glaze transforms into a hard, glass-like coating, making the mug waterproof, stain-resistant, and ready for a lifetime of use.

The Finishing Touches and Quality Check

After the final firing, each mug undergoes a meticulous quality check. Our artisans inspect every detail, ensuring there are no imperfections, and that the finish is flawless. Handles are checked for strength, and the overall aesthetic is reviewed to meet Nurture India's high standards. It's only after passing this rigorous inspection that a mug is deemed ready for its new home.
